What is next-gen? The Wii, Xbox 360, PS3? Does the wii qualify? the answer is yes. Believe it or not, Nintendo has not yet released the Wii's full graphical capabilities, although many websites claim it has worse graphics than Xbox 1. In my opinion, the most manageable console is the Wii. It has an excellent cooling system, fast loading, and is just plain fun. Lately, however, people have been busting on the Wii's capabilities, not realizing that it does look good. The Wii comes with a composite cable, but if you buy the component cable, and have EDTV or HDTV, you can play Wii in 480p. For starters, most people have EDTV, this is what it is(from the back)EDTV, or 480p, doesn't sound like much compared to HDTV. But it is in fact a major step forward in picture quality. On a big screen it looks closer in quality to HDTV than it does regular television. And it is here today in its full glory. Nintendo utilizes EDTV, because that is what most people have, like me, and I did not even know!

See the green and blue "component" cable plugs?

This means you have an EDTV, and you can play you're Wii games in 480p, which is closer to HD that standard-definition in terms of visuals. I think that Nintendo did the smartest thing, because I can play my Wii in 480p, which is like HD. Another interesting fact is that we really do not know what the Wii can do yet, because Nintendo has not released the complete specs. Games like Zelda:TP on the Wii @ 480p gives you a glimpse of the Wii's graphics, when you play a Wii, you realize that the graphics are enough, and find yourself immersed in a game that even still looks vibrant.

Personally, I think that the Wii is the best, although many other people would argue otherwise. Just keep in mind that if you're not looking for extreme graphics in HD, don't want to shell out 350$+ ,or just want something simple, the Wii is probably for you. I know its graphics do not beat the Xbox 360's, but no other console gives you more fun for just 250$. When it comes down to it, games were created for entertainment and fun, not for the admiration of picturesque gameplay, even though that would be nice.

 1.  » the Wii

First off, the wii does have hd support but cannot utilize it completely. It cannot give out even 720p/1080i because it's too weak but has it built in but can't support it. The PS3 has a great cooling system and has not overheated yet. The PS3 has support for all formats, 480i/p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p.
The PSP is $200/250. That has the best handheld graphics and great fan support and games.
Games were made for a challenge and to amazing you. They are virtual entertainment meaning close to life. They are made to grow as technology grows. Which also means that as technology advances, everything is suppose to look and play more realistic. It doesn't mean games are suppose to be of real life like the Sims, just suppose to have better physics and GRAPHICS. Games are meant to be looked at with amazing graphics and reality.
So far, the Wii has failed at trying to get great graphics. Nintendo hasn't had a great system since the N64 because they keep trying to shock and awe and appeal to the soccer moms.
That's pretty much a summary of you being wrongly opinionated.

I agree with the guy above....the person who posts these blogs is useless...i have all 3 consoles and in my opinion the wii sucks

gameplay is awful and tbh the novelty of using the wii mote on games wore off after christmas day, my advise....stick with a 360 or if you have the money get a ps3

 4.  » Zelda TP's graphics aren't THAT great.

No one ever shows the bad side of TLoZ:TP's graphics. 70% of the land is stretched textures. To me it reminded me of Half-Life 1's texturing. Kind of sad.
Then again, Zelda TP was originally a GC title.
The games on the Wii that had the best looking screenshots have graphics that are amazing in some parts and blotchy in most. Like in Red Steel they never show you the corridors in the screenshots, which is where you spend 90% of the game in. Hardly any detail put into it.
I do like the Wii though, don't get me wrong, but I expected a game like Zelda TP to be great considering it's the greatest and biggest Zelda game ever, but what I saw was a bit underwhelming.

 6.  » Yup

I agree, alot of people have hd, but many dont. Those that dont really dont care! I like it to look more pretty, but its not super important. I can always pick up an N64 or PS1 and admire the graphics just because of what they were.

People need to remember the time and effort it takes to code a 25+gb game!

(even 700mb would be hard! hell, even 3mb!)

I find that games with amazing graphics (Rainbow six Las Vegas on full resolution anyone?) and i tend to enjoy games like zelda more in there current graphical state. Its always been more about the storyline and not to much about the graphics. However, i have noticed that on higher end televisions HD makes a significant difference in the quality of edges. I wish that the wii had gone for a more HD angle then it is. Ill stick with my suped up PC for now.

 9.  » actually...

1. I did not at all state that the wii plays at HD, simply what i stated was that it plays at 480p, progressive scan, which looks better. I said ED, or enhaced definition, not high definition
2. Wii is part of seventh-generation of videogaming along with the xbox360 and ps3, thus it is "nexgen"
here is the link by which I based my statement http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_game_consoles_%28seventh_generation%29
3. I originally stated that the purpose for the CREATION of games, not why they still linger, please read carefully.......orginal statement "When it comes down to it, games were created for entertainmentand fun, not for the admiration ofpicturesque gameplay, even though that wouldbe nice."

Im not sure if that last comment was a response to mine, but im in no way saying that the wii is a crap system, i simply prefer to get higher quality video output, Regardless of console.

 11.  » I know

No, not you at all. I like HD too, but I don't have a big tv, so I really don't need it. Everyone prefers what they like, I like PSP and DS, playstation, xbox, etc. I just get what I like and can afford, I guess I'm frugal.

 13.  » Shocking revelations

I've come to the conclusion that the fanbase of QJ.net consists (for the most part) of tools and flunkeys from various other sites. (read IGN, GameFaqs, Gamespot). I won't waste the time to refute the numerous erroneous claims in these comments nor will I bother to try and reason with this community as there is little sense in educating the unwilling.

Simply put, comparing Nintendo's console to the consoles made by Sony and Microsoft is a waste of time. Nintendo has sold more units in 4 months world wide than Microsoft has managed to sell in Japan alone more than one full year after it's launch there. Let's not start on Sony.

Considering that Nintendo isn't losing a dime on a single console AND their DS Lite has sold 10s of millions of units, it's very clear who the failures are and the people who spend the money (i.e. your mommies and daddies) don't care for the pretentious preachings of the music, movie, and computer industry alliance.

Nintendo makes games. Everyone else sells products. Get over yourselves.

 14.  » I thought it was a good article

So put the flame away, cause he's entitled to his opinion. And also, lemme pose this. To the fanboys up top. You've all played super mario, or sonic, or other games from the 8/16bit era. You loved them, so doesnt that show graphical content isnt the be all and end all of good games? At the end of the day, he has a valid point, Wii's full potential hasnt been NEARLY fully unlocked yet. With the virtual console's unbeleivable selection in the coming months, the non drought of games, unlike the other two next gen consoles(Go ahead, flame that if you want, i couldn't care less, cause its my OPINION) at the end of the day, Sony, and to a lesser extent, microsoft, have lost sight of what's important in the race to have the best graphics. Gameplay. Dont get me wrong, i think the 360 has some fairly good games, but i've yet to see a decent PS3 exclusive title. And blu ray? To be blunt, who the ***** needs blu ray? It's going to make games take longer to load, and make. And if anyone makes a game that beasts blu ray's potential, I guarentee it'll take upwards of 2/3 years to make. So, to sum it up. PS3 might stagger in tech specs, but at the end of the day, blu ray, it's too soon. Nintendo have the right concept. Gameplay over graphics. I can play WarioWare, WiiSports and Mario 8-bit, as well as my other wii games, a hellovalot longer than ANY of the PS3 titles without getting bored, and SISAXIS? No thankyou. Not even a new idea. No-one remember the Tiltpad. Oh, and it had RUMBLE.

If u dont want HD graphics stay with the ps2 it's 100$ cheaper and it has the best games selection ever.

 19.  » no freakin idea

1. just because you have component input does not mean it is EDTV. it means it has component input.

2. i wouldnt be bragging about 480p.
"because I can play my Wii in 480p, which is like HD."
and no. THEY ARE NO WHERE NEAR AS CLOSE.

3. the wii isnt a bad system. but almost all of the statements above are very unsuportive. you have no evidence to back up your claims. and the evidence you have at the moment contradicts your statements.

BTW: Zelda is fun, but those are not killer graphics. not even for last gen.

 20.  » cable costs...

component video and hdtv cables may seem to cost a lot, but dont be intimidate by fancy gold plugs or the like. I walked into my local hardware store and found a 6' component video cable for ~$10. They also had some that were $50+. It doesnt really matter... Same goes for the hd cables.

 21.  » silly post

the wii is for kids to play in their bedrooms with their low def tvs and looking like wiitards as they swing their arms around. the ps3 and 360 are for the home theater or living room if you're not broke. if the wii was a portable system then i would call it next gen and it would be close to the psp in power. the fact is the ps2 (which has real HD games in 1080i/720p) is just as if not more of the same generation as the wii.

the wii's life expectancy is probably 3 years (same as ps2)
the 360 would be about 3-5 (no full HD)
the 360 elite should be about 8 (full HD but 3 processors)
the ps3 would be 10+

sorry nintendo fanboys but play excite truck and then motorstorm and you'll know what i'm talking about (it's not the games, it's the hardware).

 22.  » yes, you did have a silly post.

You are entitled to share your opinion, but I do not enjoy thick-headed people who just want to whine. Why did you even show up here to complain? If you want to go around acting like a person of subnormal intelligence than you can go to the nuthouse for that. You have the most mentally defective post I have read so far in this post. I stated that I like the wii, but my question was do we need HD. You did not even answer that, so I fail to understand your idiocy, and I beleive what is most ironic of the post is that you yourself are juvenile judging by the way you talk. You see, you even know you are a knucklehead. You tell me how you know the Wii's life expectancy-that is why I think you are a retard, you only forged a fact from your opinion. Oh and the last thing, it is not about the hardware, it is about the games. Your ludicrous comparison of motorstorm and excite truck is like comparing apples to oranges. Excite truck was a launch game- everyone knows the games get better down the road. You really are an idiot.

i don't know why I got mad...anyone reading this don't take it too seriously, I just got mad for like a second, I am sorry joe joe, forget what I said. What I shold've said was:

I do not agree with what you said because it's for everyone. The Wii is bringing in non-gamers into gaming faster than any other console in history. While the xbox 360 and PS3 appeal to hard-core gamers and tech-savy people, the Wii makes it simple adn fun to play games and thuis appeals to everyone including your the guys from the local retirement club (or whatever it's called).

 24.  » So...

What new games have come out for the Wii that haven't been mini games? I predict a loss of steam coming from Nintendo and another game drought. How long can you keep the Wiimote gimmick up.

My girlfriend has a Wii, and while it is awesome with people around, playing alone *****ing blows. I'm sorry, but I just can't call the Wii something of the next generation. What I see as something "nexgen" is something that has evolved hardware wise. Not a remote control that you can wave around and look like a jack ass with.

by Alex (Unregistered), at Apr 02, 2007 at 06:55PM

 25.  » Wii is pretty much worth it,

Graphically-wise, Nintendo's wii can be much better looking than last-gen, and a spokesperson for Nintendo said that Wii was capable of outputing in full HD

Game-wise, the so called "drought" for Wii games was because 3rd party developers wern't sure whether to make games for the Wii, basically they wanted to see how big the Wii would be. Now games are coming in more and more, and in June we see major 1st party titles coming like metroid3.

To comment on your post, that is not true, you obviosly never played Zelda, that game is one-player and is the best Wii game I have owned thus far(until this summer). To someone who never played videogames, or hasn't for a long time, which looks more fun: waving around your hand (imitating a sword or a gun) or sitting there pressing buttons? I disagree with you ,too, that the Wii will lose steam, I believe it will gather more; the Wii most advanced in this: that it is better with people, when the 360 and PS3 are directed more towards veteran gamers. Either way you put it, the Wii has gathered enough momentum to stay on top, and if you don't believe me, look for a Wii at your local Walmart.
